MENTORING AT M.A.N.U.P

Do you remember being unsure of what to do with your life when you were young? Can you remember one or more people that helped you to get to where you are today? Are you interested in sharing your personal experiences, talents, and/or perspectives to help provide this same impact on the development of M.A.N.U.P youth?

HOW TO BECOME A M.A.N.U.P.  MENTOR

In order to participate in the program as a mentor, please contact M.A.N.U.P. to determine which programs could use the support. The focus and structure of each program site is different, so M.A.N.U.P. places potential mentors based on the unique value that they can provide to young people. Once selected, mentors are required to attend the mandatory youth development training before getting started. The commitment is worth every minute. Many mentors say that the rewards they gain are just as substantial as those of the youth.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A M.A.N.U.P.  MENTOR

Before becoming a mentor, there are a few things to understand about the role of mentoring. A mentor is not defined by their career,  but by the relationship with the mentee(s). Most of us have had an advisor, teacher, supervisor or coach who positively impacted our lives. As such, M.A.N.U.P. welcomes mentors from all backgrounds and and targets those with qualities that lend to fostering the right environment for youth and young adults to thrive. Some examples of these qualities are:
  • Commitment to positively impacting communities
  • Respect for young people and their independence
  • Empathy and active listening skills
  • Critical Thinking
  • Ability to see solutions and opportunities
  • Willingness to give academic and career guidance
  • Flexibility
